Important Rules for correction of Articles


     Rule 1-  Using ‘A’/ ‘An’ 

                1) Articles are used before Singular Countable Noun.
                2)use first sound of pronunciation
                     -> Use  An if it is pronounced with vowel otherwise use A.
                     e.g. ->
                (a) You gave me a one rupee note.
                (b) He went to Delhi for a year.
                (c) She lives in a house near to sea shore.
                (d)He is an SP.
                (e) He is an honourable person.

To remember :
  • An hour.
  • An honor.
  • An hour’s day break.
  • An heir.
  • An honorarium.
  • An MLA.
  • A historical garden.
  • A UK member.
  • A uniform.
  • A ewe.
  • A one eyed woman.
  • A year.         etc

      Rule 2 - Using ‘The’

1) Use before definite Articles.
                e.g. -> the Principal, the book etc.
2) Use before the things which are single or unique.
                e.g. -> the moon, the sun etc.
3) Use before Common Noun.
                e.g. ->the dog, the cow etc.
4) Useed before some Adjectives.
                e.g. -> the rich, the sick etc.
5) Use before Superlatives.
                e.g. -> the most qualified, the most adorable etc.
6) Used berore the plural names of islands and mountains
                e.g. -> the Netherlands, the Himalayas etc.
7) Use before renowned buildings, river, ocean, people etc.
                e.g. -> the Ganga, the Char Minar, the Taj Mahal etc.
Note : Never use ‘The Taj Mahal’ at the starting of any sentence.

     10)   The Tale of two cities(1) / is (2) / the interesting (3) / novel .(4) / No Error (5)
